  33. 1. INTRODUCTION
  34. =============================================================================

  36.      There are many new and exciting features to be found in Windows95, but 
  37. perhaps the most exciting feature is the automatic recording of all the 
  38. documents you access so that they can be located and opened at a later 
  39. time with a single mouse click.  The need to search through a complex -- and 
  40. often confusing -- file system for frequently used documents is now a part 
  41. of the past.
  42.  
  43.      Unfortunately, while implementing this feature, several important
  44. details seem to have been neglected.  People who take advantage of this
  45. wonderful feature are usually people who tend to use many documents.  The
  46. list very quickly becomes crowded with documents no sane person would 
  47. want recorded for later use.  How many times, after all, do you want to 
  48. read "BBS_ADD.TXT"?
  49.  
  50.    DocMan allows you to easily maintain a clear and coherent document list
  51. in the following ways:
  52.  
  53.      * You can add document to the document list.
  54.  
  55.      * You can remove one or more documents from the document list.
  56.  
  57.      * You can remove all documents from the document list.
  58.  
  59.      * You can protect one or more documents, thus ensuring that they are 
  60.        not removed from the document list by DocMan.
  61.  
  62.      * You can save and restore complete document lists, which is especially 
  63.        useful if there are multiple users on one system (without a network) 
  64.        or there are multiple document lists being used by one user.
  65.  
  66.      DocMan is ideally suited to novice users and expert users alike.  When
  67. a command that will have a permanent effect is about to be undertaken,
  68. DocMan can be instructed to ask for confirmation.  Users who are experts
  69. may elect to disable the confirmations, which may be done on an individual
  70. basis, to improve productivity.

  72.      DocMan is a completely 32-BIT application written explicitly for
  73. Windows95.

  267. - a. System Requirements -

  270.      DocMan is not an application that will devour your system resources.  If
  271. you would like to use DocMan on your system, you should have a system with
  272. the following components/capabilities:
  273.  
  274.     386/486/Pentium/P6 Processor
  275.         Windows95
  276.     VGA (>=16 Colours)

  279. - b. The Document List -
  280. ------------------------
  281.  
  282.      The document list is the heart of DocMan.  It consists of a single pane
  283. showing the documents currently in your document list and several rows of
  284. command buttons below the document list.  The purpose of each command button
  285. is explained below:
  286.  
  287. * Add Document
  288.  
  289.      This command allows you to manually add a document to the document
  290. list without actually launching the application associated with the
  291. document.  
  292.  
  293. * Open Document(s)
  294.  
  295.      This command allows you to open a document (or more than one document)
  296. listed in the document list.  Simply select the document you would like to
  297. open, then click "Open Document(s)".  The application associated with the
  298. document will be loaded and the document will be shown.

  300. * Refresh Document List
  301.  
  302.      This command is used to update the document list.  If new documents are 
  303. added to the list while DocMan is being used, clicking this button will add
  304. them to the document list.
  305.  
  306. * Remove Document(s)
  307.  
  308.      If you decide that one or more documents are no longer needed in the 
  309. document list, select them using the mouse and then select this command.  
  310. The selected documents will be removed from the document list immediately.  
  311.  
  312. * Remove All Documents
  313.  
  314.      If you want to remove all documents from the document list, select this 
  315. command.
  316.  
  317. * Protect Document(s)
  318.  
  319.      There are documents that are accessed so frequently that they should be 
  320. protected from accidental removal from the document list.  If there are such 
  321. documents on your system, you can protect them by selecting each document 
  322. and then selecting this command.  When an attempt is made to remove a 
  323. protected document from the document list (and the appropriate option is 
  324. enabled) you will be asked for confirmation before the document is removed.

  326. * Save Document List
  327.  
  328.      If there is more than one user using a computer (but you do not want to 
  329. install all of the networking drivers and software) you can create a document 
  330. list for each user using this command.  It is also a useful feature for 
  331. systems where there is one user with a need for more than one specialized 
  332. document list.
  333.  
  334. * Restore Document List
  335.  
  336.      This command allows you to restore a previously saved document list. 
  337. When a document list is restored, the previous index of the document list 
  338. is destroyed by default.  If you do not want the previous index of the 
  339. document list to be destroyed, there is an appropriate option available to 
  340. disable this feature.
  341.  
  342. * Options...
  343.  
  344.      This command will allow you to set the various options available in the 
  345. DocMan.  To obtain more information about the options that can be changed,
  346. select "Help" after entering the options dialog box.
  347.  
  348. * About...
  349.  
  350.      This command allows you to find out more information about DocMan. 
  351. This is also the dialog box in which registered users can enter their
  352. personalized keys.
  353.  
  354. * Help
  355.  
  356.      This command allows you to find out more information about DocMan and
  357. how to use it effectively.
  358.  
  359. * Exit
  360.  
  361.      This command will exit DocMan.  You will not be asked for confirmation.
  362.

  364. - c. Options -
  365. --------------

  367.      The options dialog box allows you to set various levels of confirmation 
  368. before commands that are considered permanent are performed on the document 
  369. list.  For novice users, it is advisable to enable all of the confirmations.
  370. As users gain experience with DocMan, confirmations can be disabled
  371. individually or as a group.
  372.  
  373. * Ask for confirmation before removing all documents from the document list.
  374.  
  375.      If this confirmation is enabled, DocMan will display a message box
  376. asking for confirmation before the contents of the document list is erased.
  377. This action, once taken, is irrevocable.
  378.  
  379. * Ask for confirmation before removing one or more documents from the 
  380.   document list.
  381.  
  382.      If this confirmation is enabled, DocMan will display a message box
  383. asking for confirmation before a set of documents (selected by the user) is
  384. removed from the document list.
  385.  
  386. * Ask for confirmation before removing a protected document from the document
  387.   list.
  388.  
  389.      Documents that have been protected by the user should not be removed 
  390. from the document list.  If this confirmation is enabled, DocMan will display
  391. a message box asking for confirmation before a protected document is removed
  392. from the document list.  If more than one protected document is to be
  393. removed, DocMan will ask for confirmation for each document.
  394.  
  395. * Use a non-destructive method of restoring document lists.
  396.  
  397.      This option prevents the previous index of a document list from being 
  398. destroyed when a document list is restored.  This ensures that any documents 
  399. currently in the document list are still available after the document list 
  400. is restored.  This mode can be though of as "merge" mode, whereas the 
  401. default mode can be thought of as "replace" mode.
  402.  
  403. * Display a summary after each command is completed.
  404.  
  405.      This option provides extra information about each command that  
  406. DocMan performs on the document list.  When removing documents, it
  407. summarizes the number of documents removed.  When saving or restoring
  408. document lists, it summarizes the number of documents saved or restored.
